LLC Business Credit Guide

Business credit can give your LLC a commercial credit history of its own, but it does not instantly replace your personal credit. Build accurate business profiles, establish reporting payment experiences, pay according to terms, and understand which bureau or score a creditor actually uses.

How do you build business credit for an LLC?

Start with a properly formed LLC and consistent business information, obtain the identifiers relevant to the credit bureaus you want to establish, open accounts with lenders or suppliers that actually report commercial payment history, pay according to the agreed terms, and monitor the resulting business credit reports. A D‑U‑N‑S Number is central to Dun & Bradstreet's file, but business credit is broader than PAYDEX alone.

What LLC Business Credit Actually Is

Business credit is credit information associated with a company rather than simply a consumer credit file. Commercial credit bureaus can maintain business reports using trade-payment data, public records, business characteristics and other information. Different bureaus use different identifiers and scoring models, and different creditors may rely on different reports or underwriting criteria.

Important correction: business credit is not universally “EIN instead of SSN.” An EIN helps identify the business, but some lenders and scoring models may also consider owner or guarantor information. New-business financing commonly still depends on an owner's personal credit or a personal guarantee.

PAYDEX: What the Score Means

Dun & Bradstreet's PAYDEX is a dollar-weighted payment-performance score based on trade experiences reported to D&B. It ranges from 0 to 100. D&B says a score of 80 reflects prompt payment, while a score above 80 reflects payment before agreed terms.

PAYDEXGeneral D&B interpretationWhat to remember
Above 80Payments reported earlier than terms. The exact score is not a universal promise of a particular financing offer.
80Prompt / generally within terms.A widely referenced benchmark, not an approval threshold for every creditor.
Below 80Can reflect payments beyond terms, with severity varying by score.PAYDEX is only one commercial risk measure.

Minimum data for PAYDEX: D&B's published materials say PAYDEX cannot be calculated with fewer than three payment experiences; another D&B guide describes at least three pieces of trade reported by at least two vendors. That is not the same as saying every LLC must open exactly three “net-30 accounts.”

Business Credit Is Bigger Than One Score

Dun & Bradstreet, Experian and Equifax are major commercial credit-reporting sources, but their files and scoring systems are not interchangeable. Experian's public small-business materials describe Intelliscore Plus and factors such as trade experiences, balances, payment habits, utilization, public records, years on file, industry and business size. Experian also offers newer commercial scoring products, so avoid assuming one score range applies to every Experian product.

Creditors can also use proprietary underwriting, bank-account data, revenue, cash flow and personal credit. A strong PAYDEX therefore does not guarantee a loan, card, lease or no-personal-guarantee approval.

How to Build LLC Business Credit

1

Establish the LLC and its business identity

Keep the legal name, business address and other identifying information accurate and consistent across government, banking and commercial records.

2

Get the tax and bureau identifiers you need

An EIN is commonly used for business banking and credit applications. Check whether D&B already has your company before requesting a D‑U‑N‑S Number; D&B says requesting and receiving one is free.

3

Open and use a dedicated business bank account

Keep company finances organized and give the business a financial operating history. See our LLC Business Bank Account Guide.

4

Use credit accounts that report commercial payment data

Trade credit, business cards, loans or other accounts can help only when relevant activity reaches the commercial credit file you are trying to establish.

5

Pay according to the agreed terms

For PAYDEX, prompt payment matters and payment before terms can produce scores above 80. Do not manufacture unnecessary purchases merely to chase a score.

6

Monitor business credit reports

Check that the company is matched correctly, reported experiences belong to your LLC, and material errors are disputed through the relevant bureau.

D‑U‑N‑S Number: What It Does—and Doesn't Do

A D‑U‑N‑S Number is Dun & Bradstreet's unique nine-digit business identifier. D&B says there is no charge to request and receive one, although paid expedited processing may be offered. Normal processing can take up to 30 business days.

A D‑U‑N‑S Number is not a credit score and does not create strong credit by itself. It identifies a business in D&B's system. PAYDEX depends on sufficient reported payment experiences.

Trade Credit and Net-30 Accounts

Trade credit allows a business to buy goods or services and pay later under agreed terms; “net 30” generally means payment is due within 30 days. These accounts can help establish commercial payment history when the supplier reports the account or payment experience to a commercial bureau.

  • Confirm reporting first. Not every supplier reports, and reporting practices can change.
  • Buy for a real business purpose. Avoid paying membership fees or buying unnecessary products solely to create a tradeline unless the economics genuinely make sense.
  • Follow the actual invoice terms. PAYDEX rewards prompt performance; D&B says scores above 80 reflect payment before terms.
  • Do not confuse a PAYDEX data minimum with a universal credit-building formula. Different bureaus and creditors evaluate different data.

How Long Does Building Business Credit Take?

There is no authoritative universal “60–120 day” timeline for usable LLC business credit. Timing depends on when bureaus establish or match the company file, when creditors begin reporting, reporting frequency, how much payment history exists, and the underwriting standard of the creditor you eventually approach.

StageWhat controls the timing
D‑U‑N‑S requestD&B says normal processing can take up to 30 business days; expedited service may be available for a fee.
Trade account reportingThe supplier's reporting policy and reporting cycle.
PAYDEX availabilitySufficient qualifying payment experiences in the D&B file.
Financing eligibilityCreditor-specific requirements such as time in business, revenue, cash flow, scores, collateral or guarantees.

Will You Still Need Personal Credit or a Guarantee?

Possibly. The SBA notes that loan eligibility for a new business is typically based on the owner's personal credit score. Some lenders may consider both business and personal credit, and many small-business products require a personal guarantee. Other products—particularly some corporate cards—may underwrite primarily using business cash flow, revenue or assets.

Better goal: build a credible commercial file while also protecting your personal credit. Do not treat “no personal guarantee” as a guaranteed milestone that automatically arrives after a certain number of months or a particular PAYDEX score.

Business Credit Mistakes to Avoid

  • Assuming EIN-only underwriting: an owner or guarantor may still be evaluated.
  • Opening accounts that do not report: the account may do nothing for the bureau file you care about.
  • Using inconsistent business information: mismatched records can make business matching harder.
  • Chasing PAYDEX alone: creditors may use other bureaus, scores or underwriting data.
  • Buying unnecessary tradelines: credit-building should support the business, not create wasteful expenses.
  • Believing a timeline guarantees funding: account age and score are only parts of underwriting.
